WIRAD MA and PhD Studentships 2011-2013

The Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD) is proud to be able to offer full-time or part-time Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) postgraduate studentships funded by the AHRC's Block Grant Partnership Capacity Building Route.

 

WIRAD is a collaboration between the art schools at Cardiff Metropolitan University (Cardiff Met), University of Wales Newport (UWN), and Swansea Metropolitan University (SMU). Other affiliated institutions include the Centre for Alternative Technology, the National Museum of Wales and the National Library of Wales. WIRAD aims to be the internationally recognised location and driver of Art & Design research in Wales through the development of a sustainable scholarly infrastructure.

 

The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff and University of Wales Newport are pleased to announce 3 WIRAD Research Studentships for 2012-2013. Below is an outline of the available awards for 2012-13.

  • One Research Preparation Masters in Film Digital & Media Production

  • One Research Preparation Masters in Applied Arts and Crafts

  • One Doctoral Award in Applied Arts and Crafts

These awards are available for studentship commencing in October 2012. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 8th May 2012.

 

TYPES OF POSTGRADUATE AWARDS THE AHRC PROVIDE

 

Research Preparation Master's Scheme (RPM): The RPM scheme supports students undertaking Master's courses that focus on advanced study and research training explicitly intended to provide a foundation for further research at doctoral level. Studentships will normally be for one-year full-time or two years' part-time study.

Doctoral Awards Scheme: The doctoral scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree in any area of the AHRC's subject domain. Studentships will normally be for up to three years for full-time study, or up to five years for part-time study.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Academic - to be eligible to apply for an AHRC studentship award you should normally have been awarded or be studying for a first degree from a recognised HEI

  • Residency - to be eligible for an AHRC studentship award you must be ordinarily resident in the UK (for a full award covering fees and maintenance) or another European Country (for a fees only award)

There are two awards available:

  • Full awards : University tuition fees and maintenance (UK students)

  • Fees Only: University tuition fees - no maintenance cost (European students)

TO APPLY:

The successful candidate must be in receipt of an offer of admission (unconditional or conditional) from a relevant course or programme of study at Cardiff School of Art and Design (Cardiff Metropolitan University) or the School of Film, Photography and Digital Media (University of Wales, Newport) by the time of submitting an application for WIRAD / AHRC funding. Eligible courses include:

 

Film, Digital and Media Production Courses in UWN:
MA/MFA Film
MA/MFA Animation

 

Applied Arts and Crafts in Cardiff Met:
MA Ceramics
MA/MFA Printmaking
MDES Design (Textiles)
MPhil/PhD with a primary focus in Applied Arts and Crafts

 

Applications for interdisciplinary and professionally-focused research are encouraged. Expertise from other WIRAD member institutions may be incorporated into the programme of study.

 

Completed application forms must be submitted by 8th May 2012. Early applications are strongly encouraged.
