Student Research Poster Competition
Tuesday 22 April 2008, Cardiff School of Art & Design, Howard Gardens, Cardiff Research Students from Cardiff School of Art and Design, National Centre for Product Design and Development Research, and Newport School of Art, Media and Design are invited to take part an Art & Design Poster Competition. Poster design workshops will be held on Monday 3 March (at Newport School of Art, Media and Design) and Monday 10 March (at Cardiff School of Art and Design). The posters will be judged during the Poster Symposium by a panel of research staff from CSAD, PDR, and NSAMD, together with the Symposium's keynote speaker, Paddy Hartley. The winning posters will be awarded £300 (1st prize), £150 (2nd prize) and £75 (3rd prize). The closing date for poster submissions is 12.00 midday, Tuesday 15 April 2008. What is a research poster? A poster is like a paper or chapter in that it presents an aspect of your research, not your thesis as a whole. Beyond this, it is a mode of research presentation at conferences in which, instead of giving a paper, you display your research graphically on a poster. It is, in effect, an invitation for other conference delegates to approach you and discuss your research with you. It is also very good training for organizing your current research project into an abstract, introduction, background and context, methods, argument and evidence, and conclusions, since the act of laying out your material graphically requires you to think about the structure of your research. To enter the competition
Submit two A1 colour posters and an electronic copy via memory-stick, and your receipt for printing, to Nicola Brown (CSAD and PDR students) or Joan Fothergill (NSAMD) students by 12.00 midday, Tuesday 15 April 200o. Give a 5 minute verbal presentation based on your poster at a symposium, to be held at Cardiff School of Art and Design, on the afternoon of Tuesday 22 April 2008.
Poster format and costs All posters should be A1 on either matt or gloss paper. You should leave an 80mm border all the way around the poster, i.e. on all four sides (for framing purposes at the symposium). Powerpoint is recommended as the programme in which to design your poster. Two copies must be submitted, and will be retained by CSAD, PDR and NSAMD for long-term display. The costs of printing the posters will be refunded up to £30.00 per person, on submission of a receipt. You are encouraged to print a third copy of your poster, and include the cost of this on your refund receipt (up to the value of £30.00).
Poster workshops Two workshops on poster design will be run: 2.00 - 4.00 p.m., Monday 3 March at Newport School of Art, Media and Design, Caerleon campus, room H8a. 9.30 - 11.30 a.m., Monday 10 March at Cardiff School of Art and Design, Howard Gardens campus, room 317, top floor, South Block.
