SEB'11: Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings conference theme

SEB'11, the annual international conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings, now in its third year, for world-class researchers, engineers and industrialists, is jointly organised by the Laboratoire des Sciences del'Information et des Systèmes (LSIS) in Marseille, France, in partnership with KES International; 1st to 3rd June 2011.

Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings - Invited Session

in association with The Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise group, University of Wales Institute Cardiff, UK

For the first time, at SEB'11 there will be an Invited Session on the 'Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings', Chaired and organised by Dr John Littlewood, Director of the Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise group; at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, UK.

Due to the rise in the number of ‘sustainable' developments and the move towards zero carbon buildings and the sustainable refurbishment, repair and adaptation of existing buildings there is an increasing need to assess and monitor how effective sustainable and zero carbon design, construction and operation strategies have been and will be in maximising environmental performance, minimising carbon use and allowing occupant comfort at affordable costs. Thus, the aim of the Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings invited session will be to provide the opportunity for researchers (including masters, doctoral students, post docts and other researchers), designers, developers, clients and other interested parties to present and review theoretical and applied work in the Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings.

Other features of the Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings invited session will include:

  • Introduction to work undertaken in this field by Dr John Littlewood and his EBERE group in the UK;

  • Q & A and debate on Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings research, practice, learning and potential collaborative opportunities for authors of papers and SEB'11 delegates.

Thus, the proposed themes within this invited session to which papers are invited include:

  • Comparison of design and construction strategies and details with performance in use;

  • Validation of design and environmental assessment tools with performance in use;

  • Evaluation of design and construction details, approaches and processes to maximise environmental performance;

  • Comparison and illustration of methods for assessing and monitoring the environmental performance of new and existing buildings;

  • Case studies:

  1. Assessment and or monitoring the environmental performance of new and existing buildings;

  2. Assessment and or monitoring the environmental performance of components in new and existing buildings;

  • Post occupancy evaluation;

  • Education and training;

  • Development and enhancement of existing assessment and monitoring methods;

  • Comparison of methodologies and regulations in one country or between countries.

Submission of Papers: 14th March 2011

Those wishing to contribute to the Assessment and Monitoring the Environmental Performance of Buildings invited session are invited to submit their paper by the 14th March 2011 (if you have any problems submitting by this date there, deadlines can be flexible, so if you wish to submit a paper and need more time please contact Dr John Littlewood). All papers are subject to peer review before being accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in the conference proceedings, which will be in the form of a book chapter.  Note, all papers must be submitted as PDF documents and formatted according to the Springer instructions. Ignore the section in the Springer instructions entitled "Manuscript Submission to Springer", as authors will submit individual chapters and these will be assembled into a composite manuscript which the conference organisers will submit to Springer. Instructions are provided for preparing the document using MS Word and LaTeX - you may use either method. The guide length for papers is 10 pages in Springer format. Papers longer than 10 pages may be subject to an additional charge.

Deadline for final camera ready papers: 15th April 2011

Authors will receive confirmation of acceptance/referees comments of their papers by the 28th March 2011. Subject to prior approval of their papers, authors are then invited to submit their final camera ready papers for inclusion in the conference by 15th April 2011. All papers are subject to peer review before being accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in the conference proceedings.
