Detailed Design in Architecture 8 (DDiA8)

Translating Sustainable Design into Sustainable Construction Conference Theme

in association with

The Ecological Built Environment Research and Enterprise group, University of Wales Institute Cardiff, UK

Detail Design in Architecture was foundered by Professor Stephen Emmitt in the 1990s, who is now Chair of Architectural Technology at Loughborough University.
DDiA8 was organised by Professor Emmitt and Dr John Littlewood (UWIC) and was hosted by EBERE at UWIC on the 4th September 2009.

DDiA8 was the eighth conference of Detail Design in Architecture and the focus was the interface between design and construction from a sustainable perspective. DDiA8 provided a forum for debate and the exchange of knowledge in relation to the technology, design and science of architecture and the links between the design process and the construction process.

Papers were published in the conference proceedings (ISBN 978-1-905617-93-7) addressed the challenges of translating sustainable design ideals into sustainable buildings and artefacts, which includes both theoretical and practical contributions to this challenge. The topics discussed included:

  • Case studies discussing lessons learnt from the design process, design techniques and translation from design to construction;

  • Use of software applications to assist detailed design and the translation to construction detailing;

  • Design and manufacture of building components and the connectivity of joints;

  • Design for reuse;

  • Design for efficient and cost effective maintenance;

  • Design for increased thermal performance;

  • Materials;

  • Detailing the use of natural materials for building components and building systems, such as hemp, hempcrete, strawbale and rammed earth;

  • Design for increased moisture and sound performance;

  • Detailed design to consider air tightness.
