CARTIS NewsCARTIS, the Centre for Applied Reconstructive Technologies in Surgery is a unique partnership between Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board's Maxillofacial Unit at Morriston Hospital and PDR that aims to make Wales a world-leader in the research, development and application of advanced technologies in surgery and prosthetics. During September, the group hosed a workshop on digital technologies in facial prosthetics at the 50 year anniversary of the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Technologists (IMPT) Congress. 60 people attended two sessions that demonstrated the application of 3D scanning, FreeForm design (using SensAble Technologies FreeForm software) and 3D printing.
A further course in 'Digital Design in Facial Prosthetics' is planned for May 2012. The course, which will be facilitated by CARTIS and held in partnership with iRSM in Canada and the University of Illinois at Chicago, is intended for clinical and technical practitioners involved in facial prosthetic rehabilitation. The programme will disseminate the research findings of the group through a combination of 'hands-on' tuition with comprehensive lectures, and aims to provide participants with the confidence to move their traditional practice in a digital direction.
