News & Events February 2011
The Silent Village21st January - 12 March 2011Oriel Mostyn
For this touring exhibition, curator Russell Roberts (eCPR) invited artists and writers Peter Finnemore, Paolo Ventura and Rachel Trezise to respond to The Silent Village, a film that re-enacts in Wales the Nazi destruction of the Czech village of Lidice committed on June 10th 1942. Following the assignation of SS Deputy Reichsprotektor Reinhard Heydrich by Czech resistance fighters, the village of Lidice was obliterated in reprisal, its 173 male residents murdered by firing squad while the women and children were taken to concentration camps or sent to live with SS Officers to be Germanised. Within weeks, work had began on translating the events into a film supported by the Ministry of Information, London and made in South Wales. Exploring common themes of loss and memory, Finnemore, Ventura and Trezise create new commentaries that link with Lidice through personal responses. Observing collective ways of remembering and considering generational memory as a vital means of continuing to know the past is a key theme. Roberts will be discussing the exhibition at an Artists Talking event on 26th February at 2pm. Further information on the exhibition is available from the BBC website.
